Job Summary:
English Language Acquisition Teachers have the responsibility for supporting adult learners in
acquiring English language skills. The teacher enables adult English Language Learners (ELL), to
increase their proficiency in reading, writing, and comprehension skills in English and mathematics
using standards-based instruction to understand and navigate American systems of government,
individual freedom, and responsibilities of citizenship while preparing them for employment. In
addition to classroom teaching, they may also design curriculum materials, assess student progress,
and provide individualized support to address diverse learning needs. By creating a supportive and
inclusive learning environment, English Language Acquisition Teachers help learners build
confidence and proficiency, paving the way for personal and professional success.
Essential Duties:
1. Develop, implement and refine instructional programs tailored to adult learners seeking
to improve their English language skills, while integrating employability and work
readiness skills.
2. Utilize the English Language Proficiency Standards to plan lessons, prepare instructional
materials, and provide constructive feedback to assist students in achieving academic
success.
3. Foster a supportive and inclusive classroom environment conducive to adult learners’
academic and personal growth.
4. Collaborate with local and regional educators, specialists, and managers to advocate for
adult education and literacy initiatives, facilitating smooth transitions to postsecondary
education and employment.
5. Ensure compliance with state/program policies regarding student intake procedures.
6. Always safeguard learner confidentiality and privacy rights.
7. Obtain and maintain certification in assessment administration, adhering to established
guidelines.
8. Administer student assessments using designated pre- and post-testing materials and
report all information therein to the facilitator in a timely manner.
9. Work collaboratively with students to set achievable goals and develop personalized
learning plans.
10. Incorporate basic technology skills into instruction to enhance learning and prepare
students for modern workplaces.
11. Manage class documentation, including sign-in sheets, and complete required reports in a
timely manner.
12. Support student recruitment efforts as necessary to maintain program enrollment levels.
