Overview:

The primary function of the School Nurse is to provide day-to-day health and nursing support to those students who are experiencing chronic conditions and those who are suddenly in need of nursing intervention. The nurse is expected to review files to ensure current health information is available. The nurse is expected to monitor and follow the nursing plans developed for students with chronic conditions including but not limited to diabetes, asthma, and medication management of acute and chronic illnesses. The nurse is expected to become competent in managing the identified medical issues of the students in the school to which they are assigned. The nurse works under the day-to-day direction of the principal and must follow all Virginia State laws governing school nursing the scope of nursing practice.

Education Required:

Minimum of Licensed Practical Nurse

Must have or obtain CPR certification

Qualifications:

The school nurse must possess the ability to communicate and assess children effectively and to collaborate with teachers and the administration in developing plans to deal with student health issues. The school nurse must be able to work with families of students and in collaboration with the Coordinator of Nursing and Health Services to plan the appropriate management of chronic and acute medical conditions of students while they are in the building and on school related functions. The candidate must be able to train laypersons in the building about the care and management of chronic medical conditions of students. The school nurse must become familiar with the expectations of and functions of a school nurse as identified by the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia State Board of Nursing, as well as the policies of Rockbridge County Schools.

Essential Duties:

  • Monitors and responds to all medical emergencies in the school
  • Assists in the “screening” process required of students in public schools
  • Works closely with families, the clinical nurse coordinator and the principal to develop student health plans to meet their medical needs
  • Monitors student health records to ensure state compliance for records, immunizations and documentation
  • Attends student IEP and team meetings at the request of the principal
  • Accompanies classes on trips at the request of the principal
  • Monitors the day-to-day nursing interventions for students including medication management, monitoring of diabetes, monitoring of asthma as needed, collaborating with personnel who work directly with medically fragile students

 

  • Communicates with parents with prior knowledge of school administration and as required by Federal and State laws
  • Keeps the principal informed of all medical issues and communications with parents

Supervisory Duties:

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able physically perform health related tasks for students in the schools
  • Must be able to go on field trips at principal request to manage medical issues 
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with all staff and parents
  • Must be able to evaluate students using all sensory modalities required for thorough nursing assessment

 

Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classrooms, gymnasium, cafeteria; auditorium; and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 30 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment and/or materials weighing up to approximately 40 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities may be required. Travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards. Movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required.

 

Daily personal and close contact with children to provide examinations and medical services is required. Regular contact with staff members, administration, and parents is required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary. Contact with medical professionals may be required.

 

Evidence of health fitness may be required from a qualified physician.

Job Evaluation:

Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities by the School Principal, in collaboration with the Coordinator of Nursing and Health Services and the Supervisor of Financial and School Services, in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of personnel.
