Overview: 

The Instructional Technology Resource Teacher is to assist teachers with the integration of technology in the classroom, to train teachers to use technology in an effective manner, and to assist with curriculum development as it relates to educational technology with a primary emphasis in Reading and Mathematics.  The ITRT is to be a “first responder” in the case of technical problems at schools, performing minor networking, software, and hardware repairs and referring others on to Computer Resource Specialists. The ITRT is responsible for modeling instructional strategies with students, providing training and professional development, developing the curriculum, or performing similar kinds of duties and responsibilities as the school division may deem appropriate.

 

Education Required: 

The ITRT must be a graduate of an accredited college or university and be a licensed teacher. Successful experience in public education as a teacher is required. He/she must have experience in integrating technology in the classroom.  He/she must have experience using computers and peripherals effectively in a classroom setting including, but not limited to, printers, scanners, external storage devices, video equipment, such as digital cameras and computer projection devices.  

 

Qualifications: 

The ITRT must demonstrate the ability and professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with school personnel and members of the community. He/she must possess the ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, teachers, administrators, and students.  The ITRT must be knowledgeable about successful integration of technology into the classroom.  He/she must have the ability to diagnose and solve computer, peripheral, and network problems.  The ITRT must be able to communicate effectively with adult learners.  

 

Essential Duties: 

  • Works directly with teachers and students to enhance and extend student learning beyond what is typically taught in the general education classroom.  An emphasis will be placed upon Reading and Mathematics;
  • Demonstrates best instructional practices, methods, materials and technology that have proved to increase student achievement in Reading and Mathematics;
  • Assists with curriculum development as it relates to educational technology with a special emphasis on the RCPS technology program in Reading and Mathematics;
  • Assists teachers and staff, grades K-12, with the integration of technology in the classroom; provides inservice to groups of teachers/staff as well as individualized assistance as requested;
  • Provides technology training opportunities throughout the school year for teachers and staff to use technology in an effective manner;
  • Provides demonstration teaching to students in the appropriate use of technology in the classrooms and/or computer labs;
  • Assists library media specialists in using computer technology in the schools’ media center for circulation, catalog, and research;
  • Solves minor problems related to networks, servers, workstations and peripherals in classrooms, labs, and school offices;
  • Refers more serious problems related to networks, servers, workstations and peripherals in classrooms, labs, and school offices to the appropriate RCPS technology staff;
  • Assists with maintaining student and faculty accounts on school servers;
  • Assists with the installation and configuration of new computers and peripherals including workstations and fileservers;
  • Assists with the installation and configuration of new or updates of software on school computers including workstations and file servers;
  • Keeps informed on the latest technologies, practices, and programs in the computer field;
  • Maintains licensure at the state and/or national level; assumes responsibility for professional growth and keeps materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date;
  • Examines and recommends computer hardware and software to teachers and administrators;
  • Assists in the implementation of the county-wide technology plan;
  • Cooperates with other staff members in promoting a positive organizational climate;
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities;
  • Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities;
  • Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies;
  • Maintains proper boundaries with students at all times, assuring respect for the ethical and legal duties in the staff-student relationship and the essential duty to serve as a role model;
  • Provides a good role model of an educated professional in appearance, demeanor, dress and behavior;
  • Performs related duties as assigned by the Director of Technology in accordance with the school/system policies and practices.

Physical Demands: 

Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classrooms, gymnasium, cafeteria; auditorium; and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 30 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment and/or materials weighing up to approximately 50 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities may be required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular instruction to special needs children may be necessary.

 

Evidence of fitness to teach from the standpoint of health may be required from a qualified physician.

Job Evaluation: 

Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities by the Director of Technology in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of personnel.
