Overview: 

The Custodian keeps the school building and school offices in clean, orderly, and sanitary condition.  As needed, the custodian moves furniture and equipment and provides set-up and take-down for school related activities and events.  Custodians also maintain a watchful eye over outside doors to ensure appropriate operation.  Custodians are responsible for noting and reporting building issues requiring maintenance or repair.

Education Required: 

Less than high school education; or up to one month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Essential Duties: 

  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, wax, dust and vacuums assigned area(s).
  • Scrubs and disinfects toilet doors daily and cleans drinking fountains, urinals, toilet bows, and other fixtures daily using such materials as will keep them in a clean and sanitary condition.
  • Wash windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year.
  • To be on duty when events are scheduled outside of the regular school hours (if requested).
  • Empties trash and garbage containers.
  • Maintains building, performing minor and routine related cleaning activities.
  • Notifies school officials concerning need for major repairs or additions to lighting, heating, and ventilating equipment.
  • Cleans snow and debris from sidewalk.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the school principal or the Director of Facilities, Operations, & Maintenance.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee frequently is required to stand, climb or balance, talk or hear, and taste or smell.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; and outside weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
